Deborah Fidgeon - Couples Counsellor

Couples Counselling

When couples feel stuck, it can seem as though you’re caught in the same painful pattern. One of you may reach for conversation and reassurance while the other withdraws, leaving you both lonely, frustrated and unheard.

I use an approach informed by Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy (RLT) to help you understand what happens between you, recognise each person’s part in the pattern, and discover a more loving way forward.

Our work is compassionate, warm and honest. I’ll create space for both of you to feel heard while helping you move beyond blame towards greater responsibility, respect and connection. Together, we can explore how earlier experiences shape your reactions and practise new ways to speak, listen, stay connected and repair when things go wrong.

Individual Counselling

You can benefit from this approach whether you’re in a relationship or not. You might be struggling with a partner, family member, friend or colleague, or longing to feel more at home in yourself.

Together, we can explore protective habits developed earlier in life—such as putting others first, shutting down when hurt, or being hard on yourself. These responses often began as ways of coping and deserve understanding rather than judgement. In RLT, this is sometimes called the Adaptive Child.

Our work is about recognising when old responses take over and building your capacity to respond from your more grounded Wise Adult self—with greater choice, compassion and confidence.

Online Counselling for Couples and Individuals

If you live regionally or find it difficult to attend in person, I offer counselling via Zoom anywhere in Australia, for both couples and individuals. Online sessions provide a safe, supportive space to slow down moments when you lose connection—with your partner or yourself—understand patterns as they unfold, and practise new ways of communicating, reconnecting and responding.

Intensives

I offer couples intensives for those wanting dedicated time and space to focus more deeply on their relationship. Intensives are flexible and can be arranged over half or full days, with sessions scheduled close together depending on what works best for us both.

The intensive format can speed up the therapy process, allowing us to do the equivalent of several weekly or fortnightly sessions over a shorter period. The extended time also gives us room to move beyond immediate conflict, understand the experiences and needs beneath your relationship patterns, and work more deeply with what arises between you
