Counselling for Individuals

Counselling for Individuals Richmond NSW

The reasons people seek counselling or psychotherapy are as unique and diverse as the individuals who seek it, though typically people come to find help that they haven't been able to find in other areas of their life.

Depending on the issue and type of therapy, this help may come in the form of support, information, guidance, self-knowledge and/or the space to learn and practice new tools.

“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” Abraham Maslow

My Counselling Approach

Whatever your reason for seeking counselling, I provide a safe and confidential environment for you to talk about any worries or concerns you may have. I will listen to you non-judgementally and strive to understand your thoughts and feelings from your point of view.

Some people prefer to work to with a counsellor who provides almost no direct advice and simply supports them in their own explorations, others may prefer a counsellor who is more directive, who challenges them, helps them to view situations from different perspectives, or teaches them particular techniques to help them meet their goals. I use an eclectic approach, incorporating several evidence-based counselling and psychotherapy methods - both non-directive and directive. I will work collaboratively with you to decide on the best therapeutic approach for you.

Benefits of Counselling

In addition to help with any specific difficulties or goals that you may have, people who undertake counselling also experience general improvements in their quality of life, including:

  • decreased defensiveness
  • increased ability to express themselves
  • improved relationships with other people
  • increased self-esteem

"There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Anais Nin

Sometimes, the problems that bring you to counselling involve others that you are in relationship with. If you have relationship difficulties and the other party does not agree to attend counselling with you, these issues can be addressed in your individual work with me, drawing on both my individual and relationship counselling skills.
